The East Village is probably the most diverse area of the city. It includes 14th Street south to Houston east of 5th Avenue, Alphabet City, and The Lower East Side. NYU students, young professionals, artists, musicians and the like make up this neighborhood. Although prices have started to go up due to demand, you can still find a reasonably priced apartment. Most of the buildings are old tenement style walk ups, some have been renovated. If you see an apartment with the bathtub or shower in the kitchen, don't be surprised- This is common.
The East Village is a populated, happening area, with lots of restaurants, bars, and clubs. Some of the more famous areas are Tompkins Park, St. Mark's Place and Astor Place. There are many second hand stores and funky affordable boutiques and many small, smoky, dive type lounges. It is a great place to people watch, as there is always something to see. The Lower East Side is where most immigrants lived when they first arrived in America. It is below Houston on the East Side. Today, as with the East Village, many of the buildings have been renovated and are populated by young, artist types. There are many bars and boutiques in the area, which is rumored to be the next Soho.
